MARY'S PRESENCE IN THE UPPER ROOM IN JERUSALEM

All these were persevering with one mind in prayer with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. - Acts 1:14

“there is no Church without Pentecost.” “there is no Pentecost without the Virgin Mary.”- Pope Benedict XVI

The Acts of the Apostles reveals Mary as one of those taking part in the preparation for Pentecost as a member of the first community of the Church which was coming into being. On the basis of Luke's Gospel and of other New Testament texts a Christian tradition on Mary's presence in the Church was formed, which the Second Vatican Council summed up by hailing her as a preeminent and wholly unique member of the Church (cf. LG 53), inasmuch as she is the mother of Christ, the Man-God, and therefore the mother of God. The Council Fathers recalled in the introductory message the words of the Acts of the Apostles which we have reread. It was as though they wished to emphasize that just as Mary was present at the beginning of the Church, so likewise they desired her presence in the assembly of the apostles' successors gathered together in the second half of the twentieth century in continuity with the community of the upper room. In coming together for the work of the Council, the Fathers also wished "to devote themselves with one accord to prayer with Mary the mother of Jesus" (cf. Acts 1:14).

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF PENTECOST

Dear Lady of Pentecost,
ever since God has chosen you to be the Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ,
you have been intimately united with the Holy Spirit.
It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that you conceived of God's only begotten Son.
It is the same spirit that you openly received, together with the disciples,
when the Church was born at Pentecost.

From the womb to the cross,
you were a mother to your Son.
From the cross to the coming of the Holy Spirit,
you were a mother to your Son's disciples.
When your Son ascended into heaven,
you did not go away to be alone all by yourself.
You stayed with the Church, stayed with His followers,
praying with them, consoling them, being their mother,
just as you were commanded to be.

Be with us now, as a mother would help her children,
as we may now tell God our many needs,
this one....(pause to pray for your petition).
May the Lord answer our prayers according to His holy will.

We also pray for the intentions of our brothers and sisters
who need your intercession.
We remember the sinners who need conversion,
people with heavy burdens to bear,
the poor and the oppressed,
the sick and the dying,
and the souls of our faithful departed.

Dearest Lady of Pentecost,
keep us in your maternal care as we find ourselves in the difficult
and inadequate moments of our lives.
Help us remember the Spirit gives life
our Advocate who continues to console us in our hour of need.
Teach us to entrust ourselves to God alone,
whose undying love for us assures us His never ending guidance.
With faith in God, and inspired by your fidelity to His will,
we vow to embrace the cross of your Son,
so that one day we will be embraced by the gift of His resurrection.

Dearest Lady of Pentecost, as you allowed yourself
to be overshadowed by the Holy Spirit,
help us to be faithful and obedient to His will.
Inspire us to be holy.
Inspire us to be good and loving servants just as you were.
Teach us to stay with the Church,
ever ready to journey and to grow spiritually
with fellow members whom God calls for holiness.
Teach us to be open to the Spirit
so that we will keep ourselves at His disposal,
ever ready to be brought to places where He wants us to be.
Like you, we want to bear your Son and courageously
make Him known to people we meet,
to those who yearn for Him and to those who need Him most. Amen!
