Pope Benedict Writes Letter, Says He’s Preparing for “Home”

In a short letter Pope Benedict XVI wrote to an Italian national newspaper, the pontiff emeritus says he is “on a pilgrimage toward Home.”
Benedict XVI wrote the short letter in response to the senior journalist from the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, who wrote him saying many readers were asking how he was doing as we reach the eve of five years since he announced his intention to resign from the papacy.
Benedict XVI responded to the inquiries with a poignant hand written letter, saying “with the slow decline of my physical forces, interiorly, I am on a pilgrimage towards Home.” The letter was published on the front page of the newspaper, where Benedict XVI also noted that it “is a great grace for me to be surrounded by such love and goodness”
Since his resignation in 2013, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has led a mostly quiet and peaceful life, living in the former monastery Mater Ecclesiae in the Vatican gardens.

“I was moved that so many readers of your newspaper would like to know how I am spending this last period of my life. I can only say that with the slow decline of my physical forces, interiorly, I am on a pilgrimage towards Home. It is a great grace for me to be surrounded in this last, sometimes a little tiring, piece of road, by such love and goodness that I could not have imagined. In this sense, I also consider the question of your readers as an accompaniment along a stretch. This is why I cannot but be grateful, assuring all of you of my prayers. Best regards.”
